Acupuncture is a safe and gentle treatment which can be used to help people of all ages with a wide range of illnesses. Although there is a focus on specific problems the overall wellbeing of the patient is always considered, and people often comment that they feel relaxed or refreshed after treatment. Herbal medicine is extensively used in China but less well known here. It can be particularly useful to help with skin problems and fertility issues.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine also has a tradition stretching back over 2000 years, although it is less well known in the UK than acupuncture. In many Chinese hospitals it is used alongside Western medicine as an integral part of healthcare treatment.

Modern processing techniques mean that herbs no longer need to be prepared at home. They are now professionally processed and available as powder or as sachets which can be easily mixed into a drink. Herbs are very safe when prescribed correctly by a properly trained practitioner.

Prescriptions are not generic. They are individually written according to the specific needs of each patient, and typically might contain 10 or more herbs of different doses. The combinations and doses are carefully selected, and great care is taken to ensure that they will not interfere with any medication.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been practised in China for thousands of years. By the sixth century it had spread to Japan and Korea, but it took another thousand years before it became known in the West, when Jesuit missionaries brought back reports to France.

It is now used extensively across much of Europe as well as the United States and Australia, and many GPs, midwives and physiotherapists have trained to use acupuncture needles in their treatments.

Acupuncture is one of the safest medical treatments, both conventional and complementary, on offer in the UK. The needles are used only once and then immediately disposed of. They are extremely thin so there is little or no sensation as they pass through the skin

Gerard is a fully qualified member of the British Acupuncture Council, the leading professional body for the practice of traditional acupuncture in the UK, whose aim is to ensure the health and safety of the public at all times.
