In 1980, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a list of 43 types of pathologies which can be effectively treated with acupuncture. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine sterilized needles (disposable and never re-used) into the body surface at strategic points. The doctor will usually leave the needles in place for about thirty minutes or even longer. The use of needles is virtually painless.
